About Seven Mile Island
Seven Mile Island is a barrier island located on the south Jersey shore in Cape May County, NJ, home to the boroughs of Avalon and Stone Harbor.
Stone
Harbor
Stone Harbor is a beach community located just a few
miles north of Cape May. Drawing affluent families from a wide
range of cities including Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington and
New York, these, mainly, return visitors spend an average of $2,000 -
$8,000 per week to stay in beach houses, hotels and condominiums.
Stone Harbor is listed as the third most expensive beach town
in the country. Stone Harbor also attracts visitors from nearby
resort towns, such as Avalon, Cape May, Ocean City and Atlantic City.
The attraction for all who visit Stone Harbor are its pristine
beach and lively main street of upscale shops and
restaurants.
Development in Stone Harbor, the smaller of the two 7MI boroughs, began in the late
19th century
as a beach resort along the West Jersey and Seashore Railroad line, which was replaced by a traffic island in 1932 along the length of the
Second Avenue. The town continues to thrive as a resort
community due to its excellent and well-maintained beaches and a
thriving commercial center. In the summers, when vacationers
flock to Stone Harbor from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New
York, Connecticut, Maryland, Delaware and Quebec, the population is
in excess of 20,000.
In 2011, SmartMoney magazine ranked
Stone Harbor (08247) third on its list of the most expensive housing markets in the country.
Avalon
Avalon was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey legislature on April 18th, 1892. Famous for being a south Jersey seashore resort, Avalon has the motto "Cooler by a Mile" because it juts out into the Atlantic Ocean about a mile farther than other barrier island resorts. The motto also refers to the fact that Avalon occupies five miles of 7MI, whereas Stone Harbor takes up only two.
